With more than 250 days of sunshine each year, Sacramento is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors year-round. Located at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, the city offers endless ways to get outside, whether you’re into hiking, biking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply soaking up the sun in one of the city’s many parks.

Hiking and Walking Trails
Sacramento offers hiking options for every pace and experience level. Within the central city, largely flat walking paths make it easy to enjoy a relaxing stroll through parks and along the river. For a slightly more challenging hike or trail run, head to Lake Natoma, where scenic loops offer water views and gentle elevation changes. If you’re looking for a more adventurous outing, a short drive up Highway 50 or Interstate 80 brings you to the Auburn State Recreation Area, home to intermediate and challenging trails with sweeping views of foothill gorges, rivers, and waterfalls.

Biking
Biking is one of the best ways to experience Sacramento. The Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, also known as the American River Bike Trail, stretches more than 30 miles from the Old Sacramento Waterfront to Folsom. Along the way, you’ll pass parks, picnic areas, and river views, making it ideal for both casual riders and seasoned cyclists.

Water Activities
If you’re looking to get out on the water, Sacramento offers a wide range of options for all ages and adventure levels. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating are popular on both the American and Sacramento Rivers, while Lake Natoma is a favorite spot for calm-water activities and lessons at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. For thrill-seekers, whitewater rafting along the American River delivers an unforgettable experience, with guided trips available on the South, Middle, and North Forks. You can also cool off at local splash pads, water parks, and aquatic centers throughout the region.

Cast a line along the Sacramento or American River for salmon, trout, bass, and more, fish where the rivers meet at Discovery Park in downtown Sacramento, or take a short drive to Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma for even more variety.
