The Old Sacramento Waterfront’s Underground Mini Golf offers a unique journey back to the Gold Rush era, where you can putt your way through a course that mirrors the path of those who ventured west before California became a state. With each hole, you'll experience a blend of history and fun in this underground setting, making it a memorable stop for visitors of all ages.
When we arrived at Underground Mini Golf at 1028 Second Street, we immediately noticed that the course is, quite literally, underground. After descending a few flights of stairs, we found ourselves in a cool, immersive environment that truly felt like a hidden gem beneath the streets of Old Sacramento. For those who may need it, there’s an elevator available, making the course fully accessible for guests with strollers, wheelchairs, or anyone who prefers not to take the stairs.
After checking in for our experience, the staff shared the course rules with us in a clever and fun way, setting the tone for an exciting experience. We were then given the option to upgrade our putters and golf balls – an upgrade we gladly took advantage of, and one that we’re pretty sure helped our golf game in the end. It was also great to learn that they offer specially designed putters for golfers in wheelchairs, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy their experience.
Themed around the Gold Rush of 1849, Underground Mini Golf takes visitors on a chronological journey starting from Independence, MO, and ending in Sacramento, CA. Each hole tells a story through murals, design, and even smells (yes, smell!). From loading your wagon to navigating Donner Pass, panning for gold, and finally, arriving in Sacramento, every hole is meticulously designed to reflect the adventures of westward expansion.
While every hole has its own unique charm, there are a few that particularly stood out. The Sheriff’s Department (hole 17) lets visitors snap a photo as if they’re behind bars, and the Oasis (hole 6) features a life-sized cow for the perfect selfie. But it’s not just the creative décor that makes this place special. The course is full of historic brickwork from the 1860s that was laid when Sacramento’s streets were raised after catastrophic floods and fires a century and a half ago. The course also includes interactive elements like the “golf challenge spinners,” which added an extra layer of fun to our game by requiring us to putt with our eyes closed, balance on one leg, and even putt using the backend of the putter.
