Sacramento will once again host the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Championships July 25 – 31, 2022, which bring the best of the best of youth athletes to the capital region to compete for the top honors in their events – and that means that you’ll have the chance to see true talent that will one day don the American uniform at the Olympics.
“We’re thrilled that USATF and the Junior Olympic Championships will be returning to Sacramento next year,” said Visit Sacramento Sports Commission Director Dave Eadie. “Our city has proven to be an ideal location for these elite competitions, and we can’t wait to welcome the athletes, coaches, families and fans back in 2022.”
The Visit Sacramento Sports Commission applied to USA Track & Field, and worked in coordination with its Pacific Association, to bring the event back to Sacramento, after last having been at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium in 2019.
In addition to the excitement of the competitions, the event is an economic boon for Sacramento and will help the region recover from the economic crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Typically, the event draws about 7,000 student-athletes and their families, who stay in Sacramento hotels, eat at our restaurants and enjoy all the other attractions of the city.
Sacramento has a storied history of hosting track and field events, including the USATF national championships several times recent years, the Olympic Trials in 200 and 2004, and the legendary “Night of Speed” in 1968 when three men set the world record in the 100 meters.
