Things to do in Sacramento

Every Saturday in October, people are invited to join in the creative fun making and decorating sugar skulls at Zanzibar Trading Company.

In a month long celebration of the arts in Sacramento, Zanzibar Trading Company will be holding sugar skull classes in preparation for the Hispanic holiday, Dia de Los Muertos.

Sacramento Recreation

Dia de los Muertos is a traditional holiday in the Hispanic culture. Dating back to the Colonial period in Mexico, “Day of the Dead” is a cultural celebration on Nov. 2. Not meant to be a spooky holiday like Halloween, Day of the Dead is a celebration of life itself, honoring the deceased. Each sugar skull is decorated with vibrant colored icing to be festive and happy, representing a departed soul of a relative or loved one.

Make sure to sign up for classes in advance to save your spot, since classes fill up quickly. Kids can decorate sugar skulls in a one-hour class and can also use these ornamented skulls as decorations for Halloween for free.

Sacramento Weekend Events

Zanzibar Trading Company is located at 1731 L Street n Midtown Sacramento. Classes take place every Saturday at 1 p.m during October, except 2nd Saturday.

The cost to decorate a medium, flat backed sugar skull is $10 per person. To decorate a large 3D Skull, the cost is $20 per person. All classes include the materials and aprons.
