Studio Art Classes: Zine Zone

216 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814
: (916) 808-7000
Dive into the dynamic realm of DIY publishing and learn how to craft unique zines—small-circulation, self-published works that date back to the 19th century. These folded-paper booklets, known as chapbooks, were inspired by popular culture and were perfect for blending visual art with written texts. In the 1970s, zines were embraced by the young punk movement as a way to disseminate information on bands, music, and other art forms, including poetry, comics, political tracts, and photocopied imagery. This hands-on workshop guides participants from brainstorming engaging concepts to mastering layout and design techniques. Explore writing, drawing, transfers, stamping, and collage, and ultimately combine these techniques to create a narrative and bind your zines by hand, machine, or staples.

Most classes include at least one gallery visit to view the permanent collection or a special exhibition. The Museum's highly trained staff and instructors are committed to providing students of all experience levels with a supportive and engaging experience.

Advance registration required.
