The California Automobile Museum is located south of the Old Sacramento Waterfront and brings the history of the automobile to life with exhibits including everything from a replica of an 1886 Mercedes-Benz to modern electric vehicles, and even a car made out of parts found in a junkyard.
More than 150 cars are on display, and visitors have unique opportunities to get hands-on time with the vehicles. "Tinker Time" is held every first Saturday of the month at 11 a.m. and include topics such as pin striping, welding and more. Expert demonstrations show how the pros do it, and interactive exhibits give visitors an opportunity to try their hands at it. It's especially popular with kids.
People are used to seeing static exhibits in museums, but the California Automobile Museum staff ensure the experience is more mobile on the "Sunday Drives" held every third Sunday of the month. Free with general admission, the Sunday drives give visitors the opportunity to cruise through downtown Sacramento in cars such as a 1943 Jeep from World War II to a 1938 Buick Business Coupe and a 1968 Ford Fairlane.
In addition to exhibits, the California Automobile Museum is a favorite venue for events. Check the website's listings for something coming up when you're in Sacramento. Past events have included beer tastings, trunk or treat and sneak peeks of new exhibits.
The museum is open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., with the last admission at 4 p.m. six days per week (closed Tuesdays and on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Group tours and school tours are available as well.
