The Sacramento Safe Credit Union Convention Center met a major milestone this week: The final piece of structural steel beam was added to the project.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Darrell Steinberg have deemed the convention center expansion essential to the economic recovery of the region, so construction has been able to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic, with appropriate screening of all on site and physical distancing.

This week’s milestone would normally be a big celebration, but due to current requirements, it was a smaller affair with key workers and staff from the City of Sacramento, Visit Sacramento and others.

The project icon pace to be completed later this year and ready to welcome groups in 2021.

Currently we have more than 52 events booked in that building for 2021, and that equates to one event a week, and we are not done,” said Visit Sacramento President and CEO Mike Testa at the event.
