Full of singing, dancing, love, and '50s teenage shenanigans (and just a little bit of mooning), Grease has everything you want and more. This year Music Circus celebrates their 62nd season, and they chose the perfect high-energy, fun-loving show to start it off. Having performed in the hit musical in high school, and having seen the movie more times than I’d like to admit, it was a pleasure to be transported back to Rydell High with this outstanding cast. Led by Brandon Albright (Danny) and Kirsten Scott (Sandy), these performers emulate the '50s with their leather jackets, fine-tooth combs, poofed-up dresses, and, of course, the hand-jive. While still very much a '50s themed musical, Grease proves why it is a timeless classic.
Set in 1959, Grease tells the story of the star-crossed lovers Sandy and Danny. After a summer of love and the belief they would never see each other again, Sandy and Danny find one another at Rydell High. But when Danny shows little interest in Sandy she cannot help but think their "summer lovin'" has disappeared. What ensues is a not-so-lover-ly quarrel between the couple and their respective groups, the Pink Ladies and the Burger Palace Boys. And as the two leads search for love, we witness the sparks flying between the Ladies and Boys. Grease demonstrates the ever-lasting value of love and most importantly friendship.
Grease has sustained quite a reputation, gaining itself 7 Tony Award nominations for the original 1972 production. But many people might remember this hit thanks to the 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. And just like the film, this show puts you at the school dance, at the drive-in, and the Burger Palace, especially with the famous jukebox hits surrounding the theatre. With a fun and memorable score featuring such songs as "Greased Lightnin'" and "You're the One That I Want" don't be surprised if you're still at the Burger Palace humming the tunes a few days later. So for all you baby-boomers out there wanting to relive the '50s or even you current day teenagers wanting a front row seat to a simpler time, or just about anyone, Grease is the one that you want.
Grease runs through July 1, Thurs-Sun, at the Wells Fargo Pavilion. See the 2012 Music Circus season here. Tickets for Grease range $45-$65 and are available via Tickets.com.
You can also catch California Musical Theatre at the Cosmopolitan Cabaret and Broadway Sacramento.
