Crest Theatre

Historic Crest Theater Meeting Venue Sacramento

The site that the Crest Theatre sits on has housed a theater since 1912.  First was the Empress which was a vaudeville theater that opened in 1913. The second, The Hippodrome, was originally a vaudeville house that converted to a motion-picture theater in the late 1920s.

In 1946, the Hippodrome interior was demolished and the Crest was built inside the Hippodrome building shell. On Oct. 6, 1949, skylights filled the air for the Crest’s opening night.  The picture was “That Midnight Kiss” from MGM. In attendance from Hollywood were stars of the film Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza. For the next 30 years the Crest was the venue for movie magic.

Due to a variety of factors including the surge of multiplex theaters, the Crest closed for seven years. With the help of the local community, the theater reopened in 1986. And in 1995, the Crest received a $1 million renovation bringing Sacramento’s last picture palace back to its glittery 1940s appearance. The Crest boasts one of the most elegant settings Sacramento has to offer, featuring a fabulous gold leaf art deco interior. Currently, the Crest is under another renovation converting their two small auditoriums into a tavern.

The Crest hosts hundreds of events each year including movies, video presentations, concerts, conferences, lectures, conventions, receptions and award ceremonies. Located only three blocks from the Sacramento Convention Center, the Crest Theater is a great option for an off-site venue.
