This weekend hundreds of high school students will convene in Sacramento. Sure, they may visit the California State Capitol for a quick civics lesson. They may even visit Old Sacramento for a refresher course on the 1849 California Gold Rush. But they are, here, on serious business.
These student travelers are, here, to win BIG or go home.
The 2011 California Academic Decathlon brings together county champions from all over the Golden State to compete in a contest of academic strength and achievement. Students compete for awards in Math, Art, Music, Language / Literature, Economics, Science, Essay, Speech, Interview and a super quiz. The competition is broken into three different grade-point categories. Each team consists of three Honor students (3.75 & above GPA), three Scholastic students (3.00-3.74 GPA), and three Varsity students (2.99 GPA & below). Don't mistake the Varsity students for slackers. While they may have lower GPAs, they often have a natural aptitude for topics that others struggle to grasp.
